Project No. 8

Location - 138 Division St (between Orchard & Ludlow St)

 Displaying a wide range of emerging contemporary womenswear and accessories designers, Project No. 8's European and American collection makes one desire the modern cuts and unique fabrics the instant one walks inside. Project No. 8's minimalist interior allows the focus to stay on the standout collections and focus on the handmade detailing and artistry.

The clothing includes pieces from Maison Martin Margiela from Paris, deconstructed products from Correll Correll, lingerie from VPL, silk tanks by Sunshine & Shadow, beautiful printed knits by Christian Wijnants, and flowy dresses and blouses from Boudicca. Ranging from $100-$500+, most pieces are hard to find elsewhere and one-of-a-kind finds from emerging designers.

The beautiful jewelry and accessories would add a modern touch to any outfit. The jewelry ranges from $40-$500 and includes everything from oversized wood beaded bracelets to long metal layered necklaces.  Favorites include earrings from Saskia Diez and mohair and silver bracelets and necklaces from Stephanie Schneider. Shoes from Maison Martin Margiela and Hope include sneakers, leather boots, wedges, and heels. You can also find sunglasses, hats, scarves, and hair accessories.

Not only can you find unique clothing and statement-making jewelry pieces at Project No. 8, but sister stores No. 8a (in the Ace Hotel) and No. 8b (a men's store in the LES) have equally amazing contemporary standout pieces.

Chouchounette

Location - 3410 Church Avenue (East Flatbush, Brooklyn)

Bringing a little Parisian atmosphere to a busy urban Flatbush street, Chouchounette (meaning "darling, my sweet" in French) is a collective of clothing, bags, accessories, and beauty from independent designers, including the owners themselves. Zulema George and Sue Monderson are Brooklyn natives and wanted to bring their years of experience in fashion and design to a boutique of their own.

Stocked with independent clothing, accessory, and jewelry designers, most clothing is under $100 and ranges from flirty dresses perfect for going out to cozy comfy sweaters. Casual tees, funky wristlets, and colorful tunics can be found with new designers and styles constantly being added. Some brands include Anavaa Kisasa, Sanctuaire Beauty Bar, Substance, Undfnd, and Moon & Lola. Sanctuaire Beauty Bar is Monderson's bath, beauty and spa collection including aromatic soaps and foot soaks. George's Anavaa Kisasa is a line of bags and accessories made of supple Italian leather in bright colors. Chouchounette also has their own line of jewelry in addition to carrying unique trendy pieces from Moon & Lola.

The owners have a passion for emerging designers and want to bring them to their community, and have even started a movement called The Collective to encourage indie label shopping, so definitely support and check it out if you live in the neighborhood.

In God We Trust

Locations - 265 Lafayette Street (between Prince & Spring), 153 Ludlow Street (between Stanton & Rivington), and 135 Wythe Ave (between N 7th & N 8th), 70 Geenpoint Ave (between Franklin & West St)

Owner and designer Shana Tabor creates beautiful pieces of vintage-inspired clothing and playful jewelry that can be found at all four locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The In God We Trust flagship in Greenpoint, Brooklyn includes both a studio and retail and is its newest and largest space. Filled with whimsical clothing, playful oddities and cheeky jewelry, these boutiques are a must for adventurous unique accessories and cheerful frocks.

The jewelry is designed and produced in the flagship store and includes mainly silver and gold delicate pieces. Every piece is worth trying on, layering, and admiring, and range from $40-$200+. Each has a unique edge, such as delicate gold heart pendants with saucy phrases including "Hot Mess" and "Wonder Buns" for $40. Hand-carved cuffs with owl details and anchor charms are $50-$200, and beautiful partially oxidized long chains with arrowhead pendants are $190. 

In addition to In God We Trust's clothing line, which is also designed and produced in NYC, other brands include Judi Rosen NY Denim, Eskell, and Church & State. Pieces range from $100-$350 and include great denim, jackets, skirts, pants, blouses, and dresses. Rompers, silk tops, and dresses have vintage vibes and modern silhouettes with a touch of whimsy and are perfect for summer.

Bags and shoes can also be found in classic go-to leather heels ($195), colorful flats ($80), and travel duffel bags ($280-320). Other accessories include small leather goods ($22-$125), hair accessories ($15), socks and tights ($20-$30), and fun retro sunglasses ($15). Men can also find clothing and accessories, including hats, handkerchiefs, suspenders, and cufflinks.

Meg is the spot for clothes with classic lines in modern twists that are made with perfect feminine cuts in quality fabrics.  Owner and designer Meghan Kinney has been dressing her clients at the East Village location for 14 years with timeless pieces for all body types.

Meg has a cult following for her clean lines in everything from her dresses to her suits.  Clothing ranges from $75-$250 and spans blouses, dresses, jackets, pants, and skirts in closet-staple neutrals to flirty, trendy patterns. The new Spring/Summer collection is light and playful with flowing patterned dresses with adorable bow-tie straps and sophisticated evening dresses.  Not only are the designs made for real women, with flattering seams and ruffles, but there is also custom tailoring available on-site to make ever piece fit perfectly. Details including pockets and draping make unique pieces and the incredibly friendly staff is eager to pull styles they think will flatter you specifically (and they always do!). Styles are normally available in multiple colors, so if you see a piece you like there are probably other hues to choose from.  Favorites include color block dresses ($180), trench coats ($240), and long, elegant dresses ($210).

Dalaga

Location - 150 Franklin Street (between Kent & Greenpoint) - Greenpoint, Brooklyn

Opening four years ago on a sunny street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Dalaga is the perfect boutique for affordable trendy items in a sweet feminine environment filled with chandeliers, vintage furniture, and great clothes. Ornate mirrors and colorful bursts of silk flowers frame a large selection of clothes and accessories that are both easy on the wallet and fun additions to your closet.

Clothes range from $30-$200, with most items under $100. Brands include BB Dakota, Ark & Co, Glam, Tulle, Aryn K, Blank Denim, and Flying Tomato. The carefully chosen selection reflects trendy contemporary styles as well as unique pieces in bright colors and patterns. The friendly staff are interested in helping you find the perfect outfit and make it easy to fill a dressing room with dresses, skirts, and blouses.

Sucre

Location - 357 Bleecker Steet (between Charles & W. 10th)

A boutique filled with hard-to-find gems and closet staples, Sucre - meaning Sugar in French - is a definite spot to find something sweet for your closet. On bustling Bleecker Street, owners Candace Mohr and Selima Salaun make sure Sucre is a haven for unique quality pieces and fun, ornate accessories.

Stocked with pieces that are flirty and edgy, there's something for everyone at every price.  Items range from as low as $70 to $600+ from well-known brands as well as hard-to-find designers.  Great stretch cotton pieces from Alexander Wang range from $70-$150 and include tanks, tees, and slim-fitting dresses that drape in all the right places. Gar-de supple leather jackets in perfectly tailored cuts hover around $600.  You can find a rare selection of items from Hero Crane, a Japanese line that boasts beautifully de-constructed organic shirts for $185. Make sure to check out the flowy silk prints from Margarita Saplala, the studded-shoulder tunic from Aiko, and the "Perfect Shirt" from Current/Elliot.

Meg Cohen Design Shop

Location - 59 Thompson Street (between Spring & Broome)

Home to some of the best cashmere goods in the city, Meg Cohen Design Shop is a friendly, airy boutique filled with accessories for all seasons and fun vintage oddities. The owner and designer, Meg, creates beautiful pieces in saturated colors in timeless patterns and styles that are made to last a lifetime.

Colorful cashmere fills the space in bright stripes, charming polka dots, and rich solids in the form of scarves, gloves, hats, and hoods. Cashmere scarves on sale can be found as low as $65 and regularly go up to $250, with most hovering around $150. A favorite are the lightweight polka dot scarves in vibrant colors ($135) that are a fun accessory to any outfit. The quality of cashmere is evident in the softness and durability of each product and is thick and cozy for winter, or light and airy for the warmer months. Not only are there multiple styles of scarves, but fingerless cashmere gloves are perfect for the change in season ($65), hoods ($90), and hats ($65-90).

Not only can you find high-quality cashmere, but the vintage goods and re-worked vintage jewelry pieces are unique and make for eccentric accessories.  Meg's collection of old lockets and compasses are re-purposed into beautiful pendants ($165-$375), and small vintage charms (like a dog from the 1940s) are $12. A. Cheng

Location - 152 5th Avenue (near Douglass Street), Park Slope

A. Cheng is filled with feminine pieces with exceptional details in a comfortable and airy space. With cozy brick and pops of color, the atmosphere is home to owner Alice Cheng's own line of clothing as well as other whimsical designers and fun accessories.

Trench coats, floral tops, breezy dresses, and staple sweaters can be found in easy-to-wear styles for everyone's closet.  Clothing ranges from $50-$300 and includes pieces from Steven Alan, Demylee, Roberta Freymann, Paul & Joe, Twinkle by Wenlan, and Corey Lynn Calter.  The A. Cheng line is flawless with beautiful details, patterns and colors, with favorites including her jackets and pants that easily go from workday to night out.  Other great finds include a light tunic from Roberta Freymann for $116 and Demylee's cashmere smoky grey cardigan for $235.

A display case resting on sawhorses holds a fun selection of jewelry with charming pendant necklaces, colorful earrings and vintage-inspired rings ranging from $30-$200+, with most under $100. Catbird

Location - 219 Bedford Ave (near N 5th), Williamsburg

Catbird is a quiet refuge on bustling Bedford Ave, filled with pretty, delicate, and cheeky items.  This airy space is filled to the brim with funky home goods and beautiful jewelry begging to be picked up and tried on.

Display cases house Catbird's famous collection of jewelry, boasting pieces from over 20 brands, ranging from cheeky silver rings in the shape of electric plugs to dainty 18K gold origami crane earrings. There's something for all budgets, with prices ranging from $10-$350+, and the friendly staff is happy to assist you with jewelry sizing and styling tips. Great pieces include delicate rose gold heart bracelets from Bittersweets NY ($325), oversized Spanish Galleon ring from Flotsam & Jetsam ($160), Pade Vavra's shimmering drusy studs ($176), and little thin rings from Occa are only $12. For over ten years - five at this location - Flirt has brought an eclectic, whimsical atmosphere to Brooklyn, filled with unique pieces at affordable prices.  Decorated with bright details and vintage furniture, the comfortable space has plenty to choose from with items tucked in corners and shelves throughout the store.

Double-high racks of clothes hold knitwear, dresses, blouses, sweaters, skirts, and every seasonal trend item. With clothing prices ranging from $30-$250+, many items are $100 or less.  You can find breezy print dresses from Karina that fit all curves, printed silk tanks and shorts from Kyumi, and a linen polka-dot trench from Nick & Mo.  Flirt carries their own line (including custom-fit skirts), as well as styles from Cinderloop, Alternative Apparel, Scrapbook Originals, BB Dakota, Albert & Piccolo, and Eva Franco.
